Security Groups and Security Categories (2010) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

When we create a new user in PWA, and then we assign him/her to a Security Group, without selecting any Category, what is the Category that Project Server will apply to this user?

    Thanks

  • If you go to "Server Setting" and click on "Manage Groups". Just click on one of the group names and you will see the categories that are the defaults. If you add user to many groups, the categores are accumulated together. Cheers!

  • Just to expedite your query, yes it does not exist in PS 2010 by default.

  • Hi WLID1966,

Further to the Michael's reply - categories are basically the set of data (project, resources, views) that you allow to the individual (resource) or the group. And the individual or the group then perform action on that data.

If you associate category with the group, and when you add resource to any of the Group, you don't have to explicitly define the category for that user. You can associate category with the Group or individual both, however the best practise is to associate it with the group so that you dont have to do changes at the resource level.

You can also go through the following link for more detail about the Group/Categories, the concept of security model takes bit long to digest: http://www.projectserverhelp.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?List=f884b43f-61db-4c4e-94a3-38f21a8efdad&ID=82

    I really hope it helps.

  • Thanks Michael,

But this Categories/Groups table seem to be erroneous:

the "My Personal Projects" category doesn't exist any more in 2010. Could you confirm?

    Thanks
