Unable to install DPM 2010 agent RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have DPM 2010 in a domain (using Windows Server 2008 R2 as DC).  I've been trying to install agent in a Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition (32bit) with SP2 member server which has SQL Server 2005 (9.0.5000) without any success.  Here are what I've been done:

    * I first used Install agents option from the installation wizard.  This didn't work.

    * Then I changed to Attach agents option and Computer on trusted domain.  This didn't work either.

    * Then I tried manual installation following this article:
       http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399459.aspx
but I got the following message:

Installation of a knowledge base article 975759 has failed. This is required for
the DPM agent to function correctly.
Install knowledge base article 975759 from
     http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=184897,
and then try installing the DPM Agent again.

    * I then download the hotfix and tried to apply it but I got a long message inside a dialog.  A part of it is:

The installation cannot continue because the following packages might not be valid:

    Package         File Name                                                                 Version

    KB2393802    c:\windows\system32\dllcache\ntkrnlmp.exe          5.2.3790.4789
    KB2393802    c:\windows\driver cache\i386\ntkrnlmp.exe            5.2.3790.4789
    .....

What a dead-end!!  So, what could be done?

  • It's becoming a monologue ...

I've just done another test with a blend new Windows Server 2003 R2 (and without SQL server), but I'was still unable to install agent from the DPM server.  Something is really wrong!

Then I followed the manual installation procedure at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399459.aspx, and once again, it didn't work!

But I went further to search for the updated agent and I found it.  However, its path inside DPM server is at

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\agents\RA\3.0.7706.0

    instead of

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\ProtectionAgents\RA\3.0.<build number>.0\

as implied by the official article!

The persons who made the update agent have really screwed up the path!

And now, manual installation using the version 3.0.7706.0 agent IS successful.

  • Well, I've just found that instead of using DPMAgentInstaller_x86.exe, if I run dpmra.msi, something is installed.  So, are DPMAgentInstaller_x86.exe and dpmra.msi installing the same thing?
