Live migration available for Windows hyper-v. 2012 RTM. Not R2.

  • Live migration is available in both Server 2012 and 2012 R2.

But both Physical Servers should have similar hardware.

In case they are different processor models, then you can do the following:

Shutdown the VM, go to the VM Properties/Settings

    Click on Processor then Compatibility

Here you should check the option "Migrate to physical computer with different processor version."

  • We do not have SCVMM but will be using hyper-v manager.  Can a Live migration still be done with hyper-v manager>rt click move?

Note -This is a move to another drive on the same server.

  • You can use Fail-over Cluster manager to Live migrate virtual machines.

    But as mentioned here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831435(v=ws.11).aspx

Moving a Hyper-V virtual machine in Windows Server 2012 R2 to Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 is not supported.

So you should have both Server 2012 R2 or 2012 Servers.

  • This not a cluster.  this is a single node.  moving from one drive to another drive.

  • So you just want to move the VM to another Location/Drive.

Take a look at the following:
