Recover deleted mailbox from exchange 2003 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I deleted exchange mailbox two days ago. I had a TSM backup but some reason it failed to backup and resotore. I deleted the mailbox and purged. Now, there is a particular user´s mailbox needs to be restored. I have no luck yet. But Mailbox storage properties shows in deleting settings that keep deleted items for 7 days and keep deleted mailboxes for 30 days. Is there anyway I can recover from that point ?

    Any help would be appericiated.

  • 1. If the mail box is withing retention period use the dumpster method http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997182.aspx

    2. If retention period is already over , then use RSG http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997694.aspx

  • Hello Raj,

The mailbox was deleted two days ago so option 1 you mentioned would be my choice now. Will try it now see if I can recover those permanently deleted mailbox. I think you are refering to exchange 2007 as I could not find Recipient Configuration option in exchange manger.

    Also, I don´t seem find running this command in exchange 2003 Get-MailboxStatistics | Where{$_.DisplayName -eq “John”} .
Or is there a way to run these commands in powershell exchange 2003 which is in windows server 2003 sp2 ?

  • if you have purged a mailbox (or items from it) that must be recovered, you must then restore a backup of the database that still contains both the mailbox and the items

----------Refer to <Recovering Deleted Items or Purged Mailboxes Using a Recovery Storage Group in Exchange Server 2003>

Method 3: Restore a Mailbox from Backup to a Recovery Server” section in How to recover or to restore a single mailbox in Exchange Server 2003

  • Hello James,

I am running out of ideas how to restore the mailboxes. Is there any MS tool that milboxes that are deleted recently can be recovered ? or what is that option for keep deleted items for 7 days and keep deletd mailboxes for 30 days for ? is this option for mailboxes that are marked as deleted and yet to purge ?  My server has not restarted yet since I deleted mailboxes so if this parameter keeps the mailbox somewhere hidden what tool i should use to extract those hard deleted mailbox.

    Any help would appericiate.

  • Purged:  The mailbox contents no longer exist in the database. By default, this occurs 30 days after an administrator deletes a mailbox

Deleted retention is for deleted items and mailboxes before purged.
