Task Sequence in OS

    Question

  • I've Googled this for almost 2 weeks and tried everything suggested with no luck, so I figured I'd try here. I'll try to give as much detail as I can so we don't repeat steps. Thank you so much for all of your help in this. My end goal is to upgrade over 5,000 machines from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Edu hands-off.

<g class="gr_ gr_95 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" data-gr-id="95" id="95">Symptoms :</g> If I network boot into PXE, it installs Win 10 on the Win 7 machine, but nothing I do will automatically start it. Capturing Win Settings and Network Settings needs the TS to start in OS and then restart into Win PE for the Win 10 install, but it won't start in OS. I've included a snip of my Win 10 Base TS Editor.

No CAS is installed. I have a single site-server, 2 MP, and 2 DP. Everything is deployed to both DPs (install.wim for Win 10 and the task.

I right-click the Task and Deploy it. Select the Collection containing my test machine. I set it as Required and made available to "Configuration Manager clients, Media, and PXE".

I set an Assignment schedule to "As soon as possible". I have tried setting schedule dates in the past and future, but those didn't work either.

User Experience is set to "Show Task Sequence Progress". I've selected all of those options in prior tries either alone or with others. Nada.

    No Alerts

Deployment Options: Download content locally when needed by the running task sequence". Right now none of the options are checked, but in the past, I've tried them all.

    Next > Next > Close

The Deployment shows as 0.0% compliance, Action: Install with a Collection ID and Deployment ID

If I go onto the Win 7 client machine, I can see the install in Software Center, but Install is grayed and says it's "Waiting to Install" "Restart Required"

I keep reading about a smsts.log file, but my client doesn't have one in C:\Windows\CCM\Logs. I don't have an SMSTS folder in their either.

Here is every log that was updated when I deployed the TS.

From the client Config Manager, I've run everything under the actions tab numerous times from the client and from SCCM's Recast RCT > Client Tools on Deployment

When I use Recast RCT to rerun the deployment, the window that pops up shows 1 device is in progress. If I click on that device, I get a "Rerun Deployment XXX2005F" and lists it as Successful, but nothing happens on the client machine.

I have an entire Google Drive folder full of the logs, but technet won't let me post them.  Name which log you need and I'll copy the contents.

  • Are there any maintenance windows configured? Is the sequence in case already been deployed to the 'test' machine you're refering to?

  • There aren't any maintenance windows.  I have deployed it to the test machine.  Everything works except that Restart to PE, which is crucial for the hands-free install.

  • Most customers are doing in-place upgrades from Win 7 to Win 10 rather than wipe and load. Have you considered this?
