Windows 2003 / Win 7 Client - 1 Group Policy Setting Not Being Applied


  • Hello all.

    I have enabled user config\windows settings\IE Maintenance\Connection to Auto detect and Enable Auto Config and I've specified a PAC file in the automatic proxy URL field. For some reason, it is not being applied when the user logs in.  She is receiving other parts of the policy (for example, the DISABLE THE CONNECTION tab is enabled so they cant access and change the PAC file).

    Any idea what would be preventing this one setting from being applied?  When I run the Group Policy Results tool from the GP Management console,  it doesn't come up. Its as if the setting is not even enabled.

    did you configure the GPO setting on the Windows Server 2003?

    Which IE version is running on the Windows 7 machine? IF IE 10 or higher is used what you see is expected.

  • It is expected not to be able to set a PAC file via group policy on a Windows 7 system via group policy from a Windows 2003 domain controller for IE 10 and 11?  Microsoft has no alternate methods of setting this up?

    The reason why Meinolf mentioned what you see is expected is that Internet Explorer Maintenance (IEM) settings have been deprecated for Internet Explorer 10 or newer. See this article:

    You can also refer to the article above for a list of IEM replacements. To set a PAC file, you might try to use Group Policy Preferences to create a new Registry preference:
    Key: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
    Value name: AutoConfigURL
    Value data: <path for your proxy .pac file>
