Migration from SPS 2003? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible directly migrate a whole site collection from SPS 2003 to 2010? Which tool(s) are necessary? Are there any experiences on that topic?

    Any help would be great!

  • Since there is no way to upgrade 2003 directly to 2010, if you want to use SharePoint upgrade, then you need to first upgrade (in place, database attach, gradual - although database attach is suggested for test) the site collection to 2007 SP2. And from there, use database attach to upgrade to 2010.

Despite the issues you may have during 2003-2007(these issues are already documented in technet sharepoint upgrade center), your customizations may need to be modified to make them to work in 2010. Some of the visuals may break since the page in 2010 renders in XHTML to have better browser compatability. In that way, visual upgrade feature may help.

You can check 2010 upgrade and migration center for details:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/ee517214.aspx

There're also some Microsoft partners working on solutions that could help you to migrate 2003 sites to 2010. For example, metalogix has a site migration manager to help such process.
