still on FRS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone :-)

    I have ~ 50 Domain Controllers running 50/50 2008R2 and 2012R2 in functional level: Windows Server 2008 R2.

I tried adding a new 2016 DC and got the following message:

"The File Replication Service (FRS) is deprecated. To continue replicating the SYSVOL folder, you should migrate to DFS Replication by using the DFSRMIG command.  If you continue to use FRS for SYSVOL replication in this domain, you might not be able to add domain controllers running a future version of Windows Server."

I'm not sure how to interprete this, if I continue what will happen; am I "forced" to go to DFS now?

  • I am assuming your domain functional level is still sitting at 2008.  You should migrate your 2008 DCs to 2012 and then upgrade your DFL to 2012.  Then you should be okay with joining a 2016 DC into the environment.

Yes, you are being 'forced' to adopt the technology that Microsoft is using to provide a more efficient environment.
