'WDigest Authentication' setting cannot be found in group policy

    Question

  • Hi

    I cannot find setting 'WDigest Authentication'

    The 'WDigest Authentication' setting specifies if a copy of the user's plaintext password is to be retained in memory. If this
    setting is not specified malicious users can gain access and result in credential theft.

    I would like to disable this setting but this setting cannot be found in group policy.

    you need the pth.admx/adml from Security Compliants Manager or simply
    set this Regvalue with GPP registry.

    Starting with 8.1/2012R2 the Default Setting in operating system is your
    disired one.

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\WDigest
    "UseLogonCredential"=0

  • Hi,

    I am trying to apply above mentioned Wdigest registry fix in Windows server 2003.

    i. Does it require a reboot to reflect the changes

    ii. If I reboot, what are the effects of it.
