GPO Report Failed To Generate after Vista SP1 Reload RRS feed

  • General discussion

  •  Hello,

I thought I would share my tale in case it might help someone in the future.  This is a Windows 2003 domain.  Everything was fine till...

I reloaded Vista on a new hard drive.  Applied SP1, downloaded and installed the RSAT tools for Vista SP1.  I went to my GPO for my XP Workstations and now all of sudden the report (aka settings) failed to generate.  I get the following error in the settings tab.

An error occurred while generating report:
Unable to cast object of type 'System.String' to type 'Microsoft.GroupPolicy.Reporting.Extensions.Registry.RegistryValue'.

During troubleshotting, I found the problem.  I found that if I changed \Administrative Templates\Network\Network Connections\Windows Firewall\Domain Profile\Windows Firewall: Allow Logging from Disabled to Not Configured the problem went away.  I am pretty confident I had viewed the report just fine under my inistial vista install, but upon reload all of a sudden got this problem.

I plan on moving away from Windows Firewall soon anyways, so I'm not too worried.  Hopefully this will save someone else time as I had no luch searching the Internet for that error message.
