Hyper-V and Windows Vista RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've want to buy Dell notebook E6400 (T9800 intel processor, 8 Gb RAM etc) with Windows Vista Business 64-bit.
Is it real to install MS Hyper-V on it (without deleting operating system)?

  • We cannot install Hyper-V on Vista, we can use hyper-v on Windows Server 2008 only. I suggest you install win svr 2008 on your notebook.
My notebook is Dell Inspiron 1520(T7500 intel cpu, 4Gb RAM) with Vista home basic 32-bit. I reinstall Windows Server 2008 last year because I want to use Hyper-V, It's running well.
almost all drivers for vista can be used on win08.
and you can enable the Desktop Experience Feature to have the Vista Aero feature.
    Good luck.

  • Yes, you can do this if you dual boot. You will either need to repartition the hard drive to provide enough room to install Windows Server 2008 or add another hard drive. I recommend replacing the DVD drive with a hard drive carrier from Dell. Add a second hard drive to the hard drive carrier. Install Windows Server 2008 onto the second hard drive (or second partition if you go that route).

According to http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLGES, this processor does support Intel VT, which is a requirement for Hyper-V.

Be sure that your Vista installation is at Service Pack 1 before starting the Windows Server 2008 installation. You'll need to use bcdedit to edit your boot menu as described here: http://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2008/02/26/dual-boot-windows-vista-and-windows-server-2008/. Some additional information is found here: http://sql-server-performance.com/Community/blogs/brad/archive/2008/02/18/installing-windows-2008-to-dual-boot-with-vista-ultimate.aspx

    It's really not difficult.

  • I would think about just replacing Vista with Windows Server 2008.  I have done this with my Dell XPS M1530 and followed instructions at http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/ to help help tweak it for a more desirable desktop experience.  I run Hyper-V on it and it is a great system to do demos and I have even put SCVMM on it and done some P2V conversions at different clients.  Good luck!

  • Yes, it seems to be best version. But there's some new question due to replacing system: drivers (Drivers from Vista-64 works with Win2008?) and security options - dell gives some security options like full disk encryption, smart-cards etc - did this work on 2008, what u think?

  • Sorry, didn't try the smart cards or full disk encryption.  Vista 64-bit drivers for everything else seems to work fine.  You may want to look into VMware Workstation if you really want to do virtualization without changing your OS.  I'd love to see Microsoft support Hyper-V "workstation" on Windows 7, but it is not looking that way from what I can tell.
