Links inside the MS Word file were pointing to internal site RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We have web application accessed by  internal users  using url(abc.com) and accessed by  external users using (xyz.com).We have a MS word file inside the portal and it has content with links pointing to other documents in the portal, for internal users everything goes fine.

When a external users open the document using external url and click on the links inside the word file,it was pointing to(abc.com),that is the url of internal users and external users were facing problem in opening the links from word file.

Sharepoint is converting some links in the word document  to external url, when we opening the document using external url ,but it fails for some links in the word document and it points to internal url.

Please help me on solving this issue and your help is much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

When you create links within the documents create them with relative URL path,

    Example:         /sites/testsitecollection/testlibrary/test.doc

when internal users tries to open internal inks within the document, this will point to http://abc.com/sites/testsitecollection/testlibrary/test.doc

For external users it would point to http://xyz.com/sites/testsitecollection/testlibrary/test.doc

  • I think the only way that you will be able to do this is to create parallel copies of the Word documents - one with Internal links in it and one with External links in it.

Give them names like "SomeName (External Users only)" so that people access the correct version.

As far as SharePoint is concerned Word documents in SharePoint Document Libraries are just Word documents. There is no special handling of the links in them and for instance AAM settings (which would help with *SharePoint* internal links) will not help with internal links in Word documents stored in SharePoint.

  • Hi Gopi,

Internal Users are accessing the URLs inside the document as a absolute URL.

where as when External users are trying to access the URLS inside the document it's throwing error to avoid that you should supply relative URL rather than absolute URL.

Hope this helps in solving your problem
