Exchanage 2013 shared calendar save notification RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a shared calendar setup for a department that was previously a public folder calendar. I have a user that opens an entry in the shared calendar and leaves it open for the day. Then another user opens the same entry and modifies it and saves it. At the end of the day the first user that left it opened all day clicks on save and close. It over writes the changes that the second user made. I know that in a public folder calendar when this happens the first user would get a message stating that another user had made changes, and do you want to proceed. Is there a way to have this notification come up on a shared calendar? Thank you in advance.

  • By "shared calendar setup" do you mean a shared mailbox?

What you describe is known in computer science as a "race condition".  The short answer is "don't do that".  Exchange has no notion of record locking like a database like SQL Server has.  To mitigate the impact, be sure that users of the shared mailbox don't use cached mode.  Better, they should use OWA.  Best, only one person should write changes to the shared mailbox calendar.

By the way, the same guidance applies to managers and delegates.  One of them should be the calendar updater, especially when there are multiple clients involved, like iPhones, iPads, Android devices and various flavors and modes of Outlook.
