How to set weightage to all tasks in the project RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

How to set weightage to tasks in the project.

For example: Overall project duration is 300 days and it has five subtask want to give weight to each step such as

    1. Initial Approval (3%)
    2. Tender (7%)
    3. Design (33%)
    4. Develop (34%)
    5. Defect Liability (23%)

     How to achieve this? thanks.

  • Hi,

It depends on what do you want to achieve. You can definitely create a text custom field for defining the task phase. Then another number custom field with a formula to automatically set a weight based on the phase. The question is what you do next. Do you apply this weight on the work, on the cost?

    Hope this helps,

  • From your question it looks to me like you want to apportion time to the various elements that comprise your project.

    9 Days for Initial Approval

    21 Days for Tender

    Repeat for other elements.

This approach is sometimes known as "time-boxing" - allocating a period of time to stages/phases of a project.

You could create a project plan with Summary Tasks to determine each stage, Initial Approval, Tender, Design etc and use Milestones to identify the conclusion of each stage/phase to model a "gated" approach. Applying FNLT constraints to each milestone can help to eliminate the Time Bandits who fritter away valuable time by only focusing on the end date for the entire project.

You may find that overall your project duration may differ to your intended 300 days when you start breaking each stage/phase down to its component parts.
