Upgrading SCCM 2007 Secondary site to 2012 RRS feed

  • Question

  • All,

We have around 50 secondary clients in SCCM 2007 and we plan to upgrade all to 2012 secondary and not convert them into 2012 DP.

I read that their is no direct way to upgrade 2007 secndary to 2012.

We have lot of package content on these secondary site servers and also mostly

IS there is 1/2/3 hop way to upgrade 2007 secondary to 2012 without sending the package data through the wire??

    Thanks In Advance!!

  • No, unfortunately not. You cannot do an in-place upgrade of 2007 Secondary Site to 2012 Secondary Site (only to 2012 DP as you say). You will have to blow away the Secondary Site and re-install 2012 secondary site.

You could pre-stage the content so that you don't have to distribute again.

Another question - why do you think you need secondary sites now? Maybe you don't.

You should only need 2012 Secondary Site IF

The Remote locations have more than 500 and fewer than 5000 clients
you need to compress traffic going to the site
you need to control the upward flowing traffic
you need a local management point
    you need a local SUP

  • As Gerry states, you may not need secondary sites. Working thought this, meetings with Microsoft and the forums, the DP role can accomplish what needs to be done for the environment I need. Replacing 15 secondary sites as DP's.

  • What you can do, is upgrade the Secondary site to a Remote Distribution Point. That process will preserve the content locally Thus not sending the content thru the wire Again.

  • Thanks All!

We may convert a few out of 50 secondary sites to 2012 DP.

But for other sites we have bandwidth issues and cannot convert them to DP.

    Kent/Gerry -

Do You have more information on how to convert this into remote distribution point or how can we pre stage the content?

  • You will have to rebuild the server as a 2012 DP.

You can prestage the content as follows
