Client install via WSUS fails RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having problems with clients installing the SCCM 2012 client via SUP.  It fails the install with error code 0x80004005

    Site is setup as following:

Server 1(SCCM): Primary Site Server with MP, DP, SUP roles
    Server 2(SCDB): SQL Server

    • WSUS is installated on Server 1 and I have a small group of clients setup pointing their WSUS client to this server and SCCM Client package is published correctly.  Clients see the published install but fail to install.
    • AD has been extended and Site is published to AD with SMS-Site-SHA (my site name) and SMS-MP-SHA-SCCM.DOMAIN.COM
    • Site boundary and boundary group have been configured and content location has been set

Looking at the CCMSETUP.LOG on this client

A Manual installation of the client works (i.e. with all the content from the Client folder) and then discovery.

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • I have found the answer Peter. This error  0x80004005 is a problem with BITS on the client machine.  EnabledBitsMaxBandwidth needs to be changed to dword value 0 for max bandwidth.  The key is located here in win 7 HKLM \Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ BITS.  After I changed this my WSUS and manual client push worked like a charm!

  • Its looked in AD for an MP to get the source files and come up with SCCM.domain.com which it says is invalid.

Either AD hasnt been populated correctly or maybe you can specify the MP via a parameter?

  • The way I understand it though is that if it is published to AD and the client is installing the CCMSETUP.EXE package from WSUS then there is no requirement to specify installation parameters.

One other thing I might add is that I also have SCCM 2007 installed as well and i notice that in the "Systems Management" container there is SLP records for the 2007 site but not for the 2012 site.

  • It looks like it is trying to get files from your SCCM 2007 installation:

    Successfully retrieved version '4.00.6487.0000'

    4.00.6487 is SCCM 2007.

    You might have overlapping boundaries.

As for the SLP, this role doesn't exist anymore in SCCM 2012

  • As for the SLP, this role doesn't exist anymore in SCCM 2012

The role itself does not exist any longer, but the functionality was built into the MP.

    Hi Martin,

I do have a 2007 site present in which it is using AD site information.  I will try with IP/subnets to get manually allocate the site information for my new 2012 site and see how this goes.

UPDATE: Manually allocating the site information makes no difference.  In the ccmsetup.log the client acknoledges the 2 sites and attempts the installation from the 2012 MP, but then fails with "MP 'SCCM.domain.com' is not compatible".  I believe that I have a problem with the MP rather than my site assignments but I am definetly stuck at this point

  • I would suggest you to use IP add range rather than IP subnet

Also go through Jason's latest post on IP subnet boundary issues....

  • Site boundary and boundary group have been configured and content location has been set

Have you enabled "Use this boundary group for site assignment"?
What happens if you enter the sitecode manually? What do LocationServices.log and ClientLocation.log say then?

  • I have this exact problem!  I have the same exact setup as you and get the same errors.  I have googled it to death and went through my entire setup again trying to find something I missed.  I'm competely stumped at this point.

  • I have removed all 2007 info from the system management container.  Just waiting 30 more min until the deploy starts up again.  *fingers crossed*

So the ccm.log appears to have issues with the admin share.  I am confused though.  I followed instructions step by step and tripled checked everything.  Guess I need to figure out how to elevate the permissions but thats what I thought the system management container was for?

  • I have added my sccm admin account to the local admin group on the desktop that is my target for install.  No errors in the ccm.log file so it is able to connect now but still the same stupid error in ccmsetup.log.

  • Hi Tay Tay 2012,

Although your logs are have slightly different errors I believe they are related to PKI issues

I re-installed my site with only HTTP support and I managed to get my clients to install properly via WSUS with all the same boundaries and client settings configured.  I have re-installed my site with HTTPS support and I am having another go with my certificates getting them right.

You might want to check out these links if you have not already done so relating to PKI:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg699362.aspx

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682023.aspx

I know when I installed SCCM the first time I had followed the Step-By-Step example deployment of PKI certificates for configmgr to the exact method for both my client and server installs however I did not get it working.  I am going to be having another crack at it today and hopefully I have better success.

    Pete

  • Thanks for responding Peter.  I was focused on these errors and didn't think anything of pki certs.  I will give it a try.

  • Just updating on the progress.  So I re-installed SCCM with HTTPS and made sure the following were done:

    • SCCM server has https cert for IIS with Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1) and Client Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2)
    • SCCM server has cert for DP exported and installed in DP installation
    • SCCM client has Client auth cert

The installation gets further now but fails with the following now in the logs:

I have seen http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ta/configmanagerdeployment/thread/b8c5d3ef-c753-4fa6-b1a6-d5975ea4a115 and dont think this is a neccessary setup and should be able to get it done without the GPO ADM template

I might just revert to HTTP as it is not essential in our business case yet and I can implement HTTPS later when and if required

  • HTTPS is just for internet users right?  That was my reasoning for going with http but I set it up as http/https so I can use the later if needed.  Good luck this has been a major pain.

  • hi Tay, have you tried setting it up like so ? perhaps you have missed a step along the way ?

  • Hi Niall!  Just posted on your site with the same problem.  I followed your instructions exactly.

  • We had this issue today, nearly threw my computer out the window.

    Issues with GPO/WSUS SCCM 2012 (CM12) (HTTPS/PKI/Native) Client Installation/Upgrade from SCCM 2007 (CM07) (HTTP Mixed Mode) Client:

Our issue, and this seems to be a bug in client deployment outside of Client Push, is that the old SCCM 2007 client was mixed mode NOT HTTPS, but HTTP.

We setup our new CM12 to use PKI and HTTPS. The issue is that if you do a client install outside of client push it does a check as the log states for registry keys under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CCM or HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\CCM for the Httpsstate value, which with the HTTP SCCM 2007 client we have installed is set to 0.

    What does this mean?

Well it seems that if you do a SUP or GPO install and you have the CM12 AD schema extended, it will do the following order to check for installation parameters: Registry\AD\GPO(installation properties).

So it pulls your existing clients settings and tries to install the new client but it fails due to the httpsstate being 225 as noted before in posts above.

There are three solutions to this issue it seems.

    1. Forget GPO/SUP and stick with client push, but its not a best practice per documentation.

    2. Uninstall the SCCM2007 client first, then GPO/SUP install will work just fine

    3. Set the Httpsstate value to 63 via GPO (we went this route)

After this clients went and installed via GPO like nothing and all issues went away.

Unfortunately according to the documentation you can not use the /forceinstall switch in the GPO nor can you use the CCMHTTPSSTATE= option because the AD Scheme for CM12 was extended. If you don't extend it then you can install/upgrade your clients using that switch, otherwise it ignores all GPO parameters. This appears to be a bug and might be a simple fix, either omit the registry check or allow GPO install options to override, there are other solutions but this is a pesky bug especially for those going from HTTP Mixed CM07 to HTTPS Native CM12.

Also as a note, we have tried setting the PRIMARY site to HTTP or HTTPS but leaving the MP/DP to HTTPS only and the issue existed still. It was specifically due to the registry key being read during ccmsetup from the workstation and being passed to ccmsetup to install the CM12 client that was breaking it.

If we did a Client Push we had the option to "Always Install" which is the equivalent of /forceinstall and it always worked..

So there is a bug, and it just might need to get fixed, unless this is the intended behavior.

We are suing CM12 SP1 on Server 2012 and SQL 2012 latest CU if I am not mistaken.

**Tay Tay 2012** Our logs looked exactly like your logs in the first post, word for word except the server names.

  • We are currently working this exact case with MS premier support.  They confirmed it is a bug, and a report was filed.  The workaround they had us use was to use GPO (ConfigMgrInstallation.adm) to set the CCMSETUP properties to the following:

    /mp:https://fqdn.ofyourserver.com /usepkicert smssitecode=XYZ

  • The post by Quo-Vadis titled "Issues with GPO/WSUS SCCM 2012 (CM12) (HTTPS/PKI/Native) Client Installation/Upgrade from SCCM 2007 (CM07) (HTTP Mixed Mode) Client:" was the solution!!!  Thanks.  I had been searching for this for weeks trying to understand what the issue was.

I used group policy preference to set Httpstate to 63 and scoped it only to the OU where I am moving clients that I am migrating to COnfigMgr 2012
