Emails disappear (not deleted) then reappear days later

    Question

  • Hi,

I am having a perculiar issue where a user reported some emails had disappeared and i figured this would be a standard deleted issue or something like that.  After doing the usual checks in deleted items/recoverable items/mailbox search there was no email.  I switched off cached exchange mode, checked OWA with no message so i recreated her profile and still the email was missing.  She then reported the message had reappeared a few days later.

I have actually had the same thing happen to me today now where an email i had recieved yesterday has gone this morning. I checked the same things with my account and no traces of the email.

Thinking it could be a database corruption issue i checked both myself and the other user and we are on different databases that are hosted on different servers so this is even more puzzling.

Are there any known issues of this happening or any pointers anyone could give me of where to look?

    Thanks

  • Hi Mickybob,

Please try to search the mailbox with the Search-Mailbox cmdlet, can you find the missing items?

    Search-Mailbox

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/exchange/mailboxes/search-mailbox?view=exchange-ps

Meanwhile, please try to run the cmdlet below to repair this mailbox and check the result:

    New-MailboxRepairRequest -Mailbox ayla -CorruptionType ProvisionedFolder,SearchFolder,AggregateCounts,Folderview

    Regards,

    Gavin Gao

  • Thanks for the info!

I just run the mailbox repair request with the -detectonly switch but how can i find out the results of this?

I run get-mailboxrepairrequest -mailbox alias but this does not fetch back any results.  Is there a way to get this info?  I have been looking around for commands to get the status but nothing i find gets me this info

    Thanks

  • Hi Mickybob,

I tried to use the Get-MailboxRepairRequest cmdlet to display information about current mailbox repair requests and get the following result, the JobState shows as Queued like below:

Wait a few minutes, it shows Succeeded:
