Sharepoint 2007 on Windows Server 2008: Changing IP to use DNS Name RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I need to change the ip my sharepoint server from 172.xx to 192.xx and if possible to use DNS name instead of IP. Is there any better way of doing this without breaking the sub-websites and restoring the database?

What is the best practice in performing this action?

     Thank you!

  • Hi ediaz_kore,

The easiest way to change the public URL of a WebApplication is to unextend and re-extend your Web Application. There is a good step by step procedure in this article : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262366.aspx. If you use this procedure, Sharepoint will take care of IIS binding for you.

1- add host record in DNS

    2- unextend the webapplication

3- extend the webapplication with the dns name instead of IP

It's also possible to manually AAM Public URL, but if you do that, you will have to update manually IIS Binding.

    Hope it helps you, Mario
