Issue with DPM reusing tapes RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have recently purchased a standalone Tape drive and configured to back up our VMs.

    Short term to DISK:

    PG1 Tue-Sat 1am

    PG2: Sat only 3am

    Long term to TAPE:

    PG1: Sat 3pm

    PG2: Sun 3pm

    Backup every 1 week

    Retention range 3 week

    Copy: 1

    So basically our plan is:

We use total of three tapes

1 for each weekly backup, keep each for 3 weeks, then reuse them

    Tape co-location is used

Things were going fine for the past three weeks, because three new tapes, no issue. last Saturday we put the 1st tape back in, we thought DPM would reuse this tape without us changing anything, but we run into issues.

PG1 started ok and finished ok, but on PG2 we received: Failed to perform the operation since the tape free tape is not available in Stand Alone Drive Tape Library (ID 24050)

Tape has enough free space, tape shows offsite ready status.

Can anyone shed us some light?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

The issue is that tape was not yet expired, so DPM appended the next backup to that tape and when it got filled, marked it offsite ready and asked for a new tape to continue.

You will need an additional tape since the retention period is three weeks.  The first tape will not be read for re-use until the fourth week.

Also Tapes are marked as reusable on the next day after the date of expiry as DPM runs a reclamation job only at midnight. If you want the tape to be reusable on the same date as it is expired, create the ExpireDatasetOnDayStart 32- bit DWORD, and set its value to 1 under the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration\MediaManager

  • Thanks, I have changed the retention period to 2 weeks, will see how it goes this weekend.

The tape has enough free space as our data size is quite small, should run for weeks without filling it up.
