WINDOWS 7 Explorer - FTP Sort by DATE CREATED incorrect RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to sort an FTP site by Date Created in Windows Explorer but it is giving incorrect results - its sorting by Name then Date Created (though only Date Created is sorted).

Sorting by Name or Date modified works correctly. I believe it should sort by just Date Created regardless of the name.

Example (with shortened file names and dates):

    Name Date Modified Date Created^

    007s.001 9/9/2011 9/9/2011

    007s.002 10/12/2011 10/12/2011

    007s.dat 11/12/2011 11/12/2011

    008s.001 9/9/2011 9/9/2011

    008s.002 10/12/2011 10/12/2011

    008s.dat 11/12/2011 11/12/2011

I believe it should actually be:

    Name Date Modified Date Created^

    007s.001 9/9/2011 9/9/2011

    008s.001 9/9/2011 9/9/2011

    007s.002 10/12/2011 10/12/2011

    008s.002 10/12/2011 10/12/2011

    007s.dat 11/12/2011 11/12/2011

    008s.dat 11/12/2011 11/12/2011

Is there an update to fix this flaw? It works correctly in Windows XP.

  • UPDATE:

It looks like Date Accessed also does not work correctly either.  Sorting by either Date field actually sorts the file by Name.

Unfortunately, this looks to be yet another Windows flaw that Microsoft will never fix.  Microsoft has no customer service other than these user ran forums.

  • Hi,

Did you set the group to display the files? If yes, please disable it.

Right click on the Windows Explorer---Group by---none

  • Thanks for the tip Leo - I hadn't noticed that Group By feature.  Unfortunately that was not checked and is not the problem.

If you want to check it out yourself, you can open ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/ in Windows Explorer.  In my Windows 7 Professional (32 bit) when sorting by Date Created, it seems to sort by Name.

Unfortunately for me, sort by Date Created was actually very helpful in our FTP site.  Because of our corparate policies, I can't move the files I already imported and it takes a few days for SysNet to move them - and by then there are already others.

I will use the Group By in the meantime - I doubt that the issue will be fixed anytime soon (if ever).

  • Hi,

Group By function if also a good option to list your items. Furthermore, you can try to create another admin account and login to see if the same issue occurs.

  • Unfortunately I couldn't create another profile on this computer.  I formated my home computer that I put Windows 7 on and put Windows XP back becuase 7 runs everything much slower than XP and made some programs unusable (other than looking more like an iPhone, I see no benefit to using Win 7).  This work computer (which I now have to use Windows 7) has way too many permission issues to create a new account (I can't even delete some stuff off of my desktop in WIN 7 - stupid Public folder).

I have had another user try and he had the same incorrect results with ftp in Windows 7 Explorer.  Have you tested it yourself?  I don't think you should make suggestions without testing.  You must work for Microsoft - you don't look into a problem, make suggestions that you don't know will correct the issue, and assume it's fixed.

Am I using the Date Created sorting incorrectly or is this an issue that is going to be (or, more likely, never going to be) fixed?  I don't consider a work-around the same as fixing an issue.  This seems to be a issue where the programmers copied the code for the Name sort and didn't replace the field name when putting it in the Date Created event.

  • Actually setting Group to "Created" solved my issue with this bug. All I wanted to do was copy the latest photos off a cell phone camera to my server. Ran into same issue with the Created column sort not working properly and dates mixed up and not in order.

So checked out Leo's tip and realized if group by created date, that got me what I wanted.Basically if Windows Explorer switches to the view that does not allow showing a "modified date" column, the sort by date does not work.

Thanks Leo, your point helped me out.
