Move WSUS database from root partition to another drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Running wsus on Win 2012 R2, would like to know how we can move wsus database (WID) from root partition to another partition on the same server as its consuming lot of space on the root partition.

Please suggest how this can be achieved.

I have already referred URL (https://4sysops.com/archives/move-wsus-database-and-content-updates-to-a-different-drive-or-folder/),

But post performing the steps it completed successfully without any errors but getting below errors in Event logs.

1] System Logs: The WSUS Service service entered the stopped state. (Event ID: 7036)

2] Application Logs: Update Services failed its initialization and stopped. (Event ID: 507)

  • Hi,

the step by step that you followed actually covers everything I can think of. Can you connect to the WID instance and run

    USE SUSDB
    GO

    without getting errors?

  • The SUSDB database shouldn't be taking up much space. Mine is only about 6.5 GB.

  • Hi MFK_2020,

Thanks for your posting on this forum.

Because the path to the WID database is the default, it is difficult to migrate the database. It is recommended to migrate the WID database to the SQL database. Please refer to the following steps:
    1. Stop the IIS and WSUS services on the WSUS server
    2. Detach SUSDB from the Windows Internal Database
    3. Copy the SUSDB files to the SQL Server
    4. Attach SUSDB to the SQL Instance
    5. Verify SQL Server and Database Logins and Permissions
    6. Edit the registry to point WSUS to the SQL Server Instance
