SharePoint recovery from backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, our server had an accident and I was given the task to recover SharePoint website. I'm new to SharePoint and all what I'v got is a backup created with stsadm.exe. I installed SharePoind successfully on reinstalled OS and performed recovery without errors. But when I open the website it's almost empty like it's created new. I thouht I should see the old website after the recovery. Besides the backup I don't have any other files, neither copy of VirtualDirectories folder. Please advise. Thank you in advance!

  • Hello Zoeb S, many thanks for your reply. Yes it showed 0 sites. Luckily I have foud a solution in between that helped me. I post it here for the others who gets into the same troubles. I found it on this forum: http://blah.winsmarts.com/2006-12-Backup-Restore_a_site_collection_in_SharePoint_2007.aspx

Steps to do in SharePoint central Administration:

    1) Create new application

    2) Create site collection for the application

    3) Delete content database of the application

central administration - > application management - > content databases

    4) Click on wss_content_xxx (database name)

    5) Select "remove content databases" and click OK

    6) Restore backup database (using moss functionality)

central administration - > operations - > restore from backup

    7) Run following command from command prompt

    stsadm.exe -O addcontentdb -url http://xxx:111/sites/zzz -databasename wss_content_xxx

I skipped step 7 as I specified target webapplication during import so imported database became content database automatically.

  • You have the backup for the site from Stsadm ? i.e .Bak Files right ?

So you restored it on a new site using Stsadm -o restore. When you go to Central Admin - Application management - Manage content database. Do you see the number of sites ? on the restored DB? or does it show 0 ?
