Log Off vs. Shut Down RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have several servers Windows 2008 R2 for test. I shut them down every evening. Some of them present by default the option Start / Shut Down. Some others present the option Start / Log Off.

How can I set these servers so that all of them present the default : Start / Shut Down?

    Thanks

  • Server 2008 R2 (not 2008) and Win 7 local and domain group policy includes an option to set the default action of the start menu shutdown/logoff button. It is located under User configuration | policies | Administrative templates | Start Menu and taskbar | Change start menu power button. If you enable the policy and link it to an OU containing the user/s you wish to affect it allows you to set the action of the button. It is possible this is already enabled in some policy if you have logoff as the default should be shut down.

  • Sorry. If your servers are part of a domain, on your domain controller you can go to Administrative tools | Group Policy management Console | then there are user and computer configurations.

If not part of a domain you can set local policies by entering in the start / run box gpedit.msc and it will bring up the local group policy management console.

If you have not worked with Group Policy before you may want to do a little reading first.
