  • Question

  •  i was reading some document on Hosted Exchange and some design examples included External DNS Server, so i was wondering what this server is used for and should the hosted exchange environment include External DNS Server?

  • Transport servers (HT and Edge roles) can specify Internal and External DNS servers.  By default, all Send Connectors use the internal server settings unless you set the UseExternalDNSServersEnabled flag.  This can be useful if you need a specific send connector to resolve the next hop using different servers than those defaulted in the internal DNS.  This type of resolution topology isn't exclusive to Hosting but rather depends more on how your network is setup (for example, if you implement split-DNS).

Check out the Understanding Send Connectors page for more information.  Look under the Network Settings --> Using DNS to Route E-mail.
