1st question: Any step by step guide how to migrate our 2003 to 2012R2.

Answers

  • Hi,

For the second question: Windows 2012 R2 Domain Controllers are supported as long as all Exchange servers are at least Exchange 2007 SP3 Rollup 13. Please note, that maximum forest and domain functional levels are Windows 2012 (not 2012 R2).

  • For (1), this is an upgrade and not a migration.
Assuming that you have a new server, you can proceed as the following:

    1. Promote the new server as a DC/DNS/GC server
    2. Transfer the FSMO roles to the new server
    3. Check that the DC and AD replication are healthy using dcdiag and repadmin commands
    4. If no errors appear, you can proceed with demoting the old DC

Please take system state backups before proceeding. Also, please take note of the requirements for Exchange Server patch level before proceeding: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/rmilne/2013/09/17/exchange-support-for-windows-server-2012-r2/

For (2), see the requirements I shared.

  • Yes, according to this as well, you are limited to server 2012 forest functionality level on Exch. 2007.

  • Thanks for the Information.

Can we upgrade the Current Servers that is running exchange 2007 to Exchange 2007 SP3 Rollup13, Currently all the Servers are running on Windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

Or do we need to install Exchange 2007 SP3 Rollup 13 on New Servers and Migrate the Old Exchange to New.

    Regards

You should update all existing Exchange servers to at least Exchange 2007 SP3 RU13. Rollup 13 is fully supported for Windows 2003 SP2. Then you can upgrade your Domain Controller to Windows 2012 R2.
