Unable to convert to Dynamic Disk

    Question

  • Hi,

Can someone shed some light on the requirements of converting a boot disk to dynamic for raid 1 purposes?

I have 2 local 1 TB disks that i want to configure in RAID 1 and 2 ISCSI volumes loaded from the remote storage at home.

    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ###  Status         Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
      --------  -------------  -------  -------  ---  ---
      Disk 0    Online          931 GB   292 GB
      Disk 1    Online          931 GB   931 GB   *
      Disk 2    Online         1024 GB      0 B   *    *
      Disk 3    Online          500 GB  1024 KB   *

whenever i try to sel disk 0, convert dynamic, i get this

    Virtual Disk Service error:
There is not enough usable space for this operation.

my partitions on disk 0 are as follows

    DISKPART> list partition

      Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
      -------------  ----------------  -------  -------
      Partition 1    Primary            100 MB  1024 KB
      Partition 2    Primary            638 GB   101 MB
      Partition 3    Recovery           450 MB   931 GB

my volumes on the system are as follows (ignore E and F, they are ISCSI mounted):

    DISKPART> list volume

Volume ###  Ltr  Label        Fs     Type        Size     Status     Info
      ----------  ---  -----------  -----  ----------  -------  ---------  --------
Volume 0     E   Hypverv      NTFS   Simple       499 GB  Healthy
Volume 1     F   OneDrive     NTFS   Simple      1023 GB  Healthy
Volume 2         System Rese  NTFS   Partition    100 MB  Healthy
Volume 3     C                NTFS   Partition    638 GB  Healthy    System
Volume 4                      NTFS   Partition    450 MB  Healthy    Hidden

Any ideas? yes, i am trying to convert the c drive and it's disk and it's not a paging disk or a hibernation disk, see below disk details.

  • Thanks, but I am past that. Issue was solved eventually by removing all partitions off the disk and rebuilding.

The recovery partition started at offset 931, which means the free partition i was creating to be buffered was not being used. somehow, windows needed to write at the last few sectors of the disk, or at least my understanding of how it works now.

    Regards,
