How different is the user interface of current SharePoint online from SharePoint 2013 on-prem?

    Question

  • How different is the user interface of current SharePoint online (based on SharePoint 2016 I believe) from the one in SharePoint 2013 on-prem?

In otherwords, if we migrate from SharePoint 2013 on-prem to Office 365 (SharePoint Online) will the UI differece be large to the extend that end users need a training to get familiar to the new interface?

Thanks for any information or advice!

  • Hi QuickLaunch,

There is difference in UI between current SharePoint online and SharePoint on premise.

In current SharePoint online, the new design for the list and library comes out. For more detailed information, you could refer to the article below.

And you could change to classic design in list, open the list->click the gear in the top right corner and select the list settings->advanced settings->list experience.

If you want to switch to classic design in the tenant-level, you could go to O365 center admin->SharePoint->settings->SharePoint lists and libraries experience.

  • Most of the UI remains the same, there will be slight learning curve on the new list and library experience and app launcher. And also on the other workloads like Delve, SharePoint page and Onedrive.

  • I agree with Sara. Office 365 has a significantly different UI to that found in SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint 2016, they are both significantly behind the SharePoint Online experience. You will need to do some updated training especially for the waffle and for the modern document library.
