Calendar Events Duplicating Themselves, Multiplying, Some Items Disappearing, Outlook 2010, 2011, Exchange 2010, Blackberry RRS feed

  • Question

  • 1)      There are MANY calendar events that have “multiplied themselves”

    2)      This has happened since the new system, but not before

    3)      This shows up on Outlook 2010 (Jodi), Outlook 2011, OWA, and Blackberry

    4)      These events are more often than not recurring events

    5)      But some events that are single instance are duplicated

    6)      Some events that are recurring are not multiplied

    7)      If an event is set for every Thursday, then it is most often multiplied every Thursday

    8)      And it is often multiplied the same number of times (if the even shows up 6 times this Thursday, then most Thursdays will be the same)

    9)      However, there a couple of times where a given Thursday might have 11 of them instead of 6.  OR may have only 1 of them, and not be multiplied

    10)   The events that are multiplied, and were created under the old Exchange server, if you look at their occurrences before the changeover, they are SOMETIMES duplicated back then as well

    11)   Further, it is not just events multiplying that is the problem.  There are events that literally DISAPPEAR.

    12)   For instance, I was looking at Kerri’s calendar with Jodi, and we were investigating an event called “Hanini.”  The event on September 8th was NOT multiplied.  We then moved forward to the next occurrence, and it was multiplied.  We then went back to September 8th, and the event was GONE.  We did not accidentally delete it or anything, it just disappeared

    13)   This has happened according to Jodi quite a few times to reminders and appointments both

    14)   This has not happened with Contacts or anything else.

    15)   These problems do not seem to be happening when created on the Blackberry, or when created on Outlook 2010, or when on Outlook 2011.  By this I mean, we see no pattern to the behaviors in the regard of what interface to the Exchange Server we are using.

    16)   But, last night the disappearance happened to an item while we were using 2010, and we are sure that Outlook 2011 was turned off, and we are sure that Blackberry was turned off.

  • Hi Simon

I have confirmed in our environment that above sequence caused the creation of 2 calendars via the BlackBerry Desktop restore software and that this 2nd calendar was synchronized back via our Quest calendar syncing tool. Also caused missing appointments, non default calendar etc.

    Solution:

    1) Delete the user from the BES server on the Exchange 2010 Forest.

    2) Do a security wipe of the BlackBerry device (NB: you will have to manually backup any BBS contacts etc prior to this as these get wiped)

    3) Stopped the Calendar sync job

    4) Logged into the live Exchange 2010 mailbox and export calendar entries fro both Calendars (Calendar and Calendar1) to a pst.

    5) Reset Outlook folders in this profile (outlook.exe /resetfolders). This sets the default calendar back to Calendar (it was Calendar1)

    6) Delete the 2nd Calendar1 folder

    7) Do the same procedure (in 4 , 5 & 6) for the legacy Outlook profile on the Exchamge 2003 Forest

    8) Import any missing calendar entries in the live (Exch2010) Outlook calendar. This did cause some duplicate entries, which had to be deleted manually for older appointments

    9) Setup and authorize the BB device and user on the BES server in the live Exchange 2010 forest.

    10) Re-start the Calendar sync job

    11) The calendar started working 100% on both Outlook and the BB device (no 2nd calendar), no new duplicates, no missing appointments.

I have monitored this for 2 days and all seems fine.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi forum

I am having a very similar problem with Blackberry Enterprise Express server 5.0.3 and Exchange 2010 SP1.

We have just migrated a bunch of users from Exch2003 with the Quest tool and have been having these issues with Blackberry users.

The BB users are deleted off the old BB Xpress server and set up from scratch on the new Exch 2010 Org BB Express server. (different Orgs)

After some time (a day or two), we have noticed that there has been a second calender (Calendar1) created in the users's mailbox (Outlook 2007 and 2010), and a load of duplicate entries in both calendars, recurring appointments have been deleted, some appointments missing.

We then backed up and deleted the second calendar, restored entries, and re-setup the user from scratch on BB, and after a while the same occurred.

I must add, we have a two way Calendar sync (via Quest) running between the new (migrated) Exch 2010 mailbox and the legacy Exch 2003 mailbox (to keep Free/Busy up to date for non-migrated users).

There is only an issue with Calendars, mail and contacts are fine, and all non-Blackberry users are fine.

We spoke to RIM and they suggested that this issue may occur when using the BB desktop suite to restore some BB data, but second time around we did not use this software at all.

No issues with other Active-Sync type mobile users.

    Any suggestions.?

    Thanks

  • Hello,

Does this issue happen to one specific user or all users?

According to the best practice of manage calendar items on mailbox, it is not recommended to use too much different Outlook versions.

So, please delete the duplicate items in Outlook, Then run “Outlook /cleanfreebusy” to re-publish the current free/busy info. Then please keep only using the Outlook for calendar access and see if the issue persists.

    Thanks,

    Simon

  • Hi Simon

Thanks for the reply..just to clear up any confusion:

    1) This only happens with Exchange 2010 users who are ALSO BlackBerry Express users on the new BlackBerry Express server configured on the Exchange 2010 side

    2) The other users who have been migrated to Exchange 2010 (any version of Outlook) do NOT have this problem, even with the Quest Calendar sync running

    3) I don't think this is an Outlook issue, it seems to be the way in which BlackBerry Express server retrives or writes Calendar information.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

  • Hi Thomas

I think I have discovered the reason for our unpredictable Calendar behaviour....may not be related to your issue...

    1) The second Calendar folder (Calendar1) was definitely incorrectly created by the BB desktop backup/restore software suite (that we used to try and restore some user settings to the device)  as suggested by RIM. (don't use this software when migrating a BB device, it seems it retains some legacy profile data from the previous connection)

    2) This second (incorrect) Calendar1 folder was then synchronized back to our legacy Exch2003 Org by the Quest Tool running a calendar sync job.

    3) We then repaired the user's Calendar on the Exch2010 (live) side (removed the second calendar folder, restored what entries we could from PST's)

    4) Re-setup the user from scratch on the BB Expres server on the Exchange 2010 side (one has to do a security wipe on the device when connecting the device to the new BB Xpress server)

    5) When the Calendar Sync job activated, it synched the Exch2003 incorrect Calendar1 folder back to Exch2010 and the symptom then reappears on the live Exch2010 mailbox. (dual Calendar folders, duplicate appointments, recurrings missing etc)

I still need to test the process again, clean up the Calendar on the legacy Exch2003 side, then start the BB device and Calendar syncs again......

    Will post my results tomorrow.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

  • Hello Ralphcott,

Yes, I also have some customers, who works both with BES server and Exchange Server, always mass their calendar items.

By capturing the trace log, I found the BES admin account randomly add or remove some attributes for the calendar items.

Ralphcott, if you are sure your issues is mostly related to the BES server, please also contact the Black Berry support to confirm this issue:
