RTM - No automatic driver install RRS feed

  • Question

  • I searched the group to see if this had come up before, but couldn't find anything. So here goes:

When I plug a USB device into a USB port (either a new device, or an exisitng device into a new port), Vista tries to find a driver and in 90% of all cases fails. However, when I tell Vista to go and search the SYSTEMROOT or SYSTEMDRIVE it invariably finds the driver and installs it correctly. The hardware I am installing is nothing exotic, but bog-standard stuff like MS IntelliMouse or hardware that already has Vista-compatible drivers installed.

This problem did not occur out-of-the-box. It appears to be something that has been "messed up" either by GPO settings coming down from the domain or something set up via our corporate SW distribution tool (HP OpenView Configuration Manager, aka Novadigm Radia).

Does anyone have any idea where to start looking?
