Windows Explorer slow file access after server migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • An old NT4 file server/PDC was demoted and a new Windows 2003 PDC server was put into place some time ago. The old server was kept on the network for a while and then was taken offline. Now it seems that any workstation which was present in the office at the time when the NT4 server was up is experiencing a windows explorer problem. Any file, no matter the parent application, takes about 1 minute or longer to open when the file is double clicked in Windows Explorer. The only solution to date has been to open the files directly from the parent program, which takes 1 to 2 seconds , but is also not what users are used to doing. If anyone has had a similar problem and can suggest a solution, please reply.

  • Figured out the problem. Had to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all affected computers.
