Project Server 2010 and Project Sites Hiearchy RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We are in the initial stages of a Project Server 2010 implementation and wanted to ask around for best practices on Project Site hiearchy.  Right now the system creates a project site automatically at the root of PWA anytime a project is created (ex. https://<projectserver>/PWA/<Project Site> )  We have different departments using PRJ Server 2010 and I could imagine that over time it may get pretty messy when browsing project sites.  Is there a way to group project sites based on Project Type in a logical manner?  Thanks in advance!

  •  Hi,

You can create Project Custom field to identify specific department and use custom event handler in association with EPT which can read project custom field and based on that can create workspace site in specific site collection.

But remember disaster recovery process will be complicated and needs to be tested as well.

Another option is you can add multiple content databases and restrict the growth using "maximum number of sites allowed" setting.

  • From a security perspective - you dont want to give permissions to PM's from various departments under one category.

You could create seperate PWA instances for different departments on the same sharepoint farm (I dont know your capacity requirements).

On the same farm, you could create

    http://hr/pwa

    http://it/pwa

    and so on.

The implication of this is you need seperate content_db, published_db, archive_db, reporting_db and draft_db for each instance.

I think your mileage will vary, but this is one option.

  • hi,

if you really want to do it, then following Hrishid advise can help you achieve this, for your reference about how to modify and devleop custom server event handlers: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms469450(v=office.12).aspx

but i will also suggest the same that you dont really need to do such customization to avoid mess, proper group/categor/rbs configuration and permissions will let each resource (TM/PM) of your organization to access project site related to them only. i have seen organization with more than 500 projects using almost the same number of project site and never come across such complain.

but yes, if you are worried about he infrastructure issues then you migh can follow Nilesh advise to manage more than 1 site collection.

    hope this hleps.
