Safely Remove Hardware and power to USB Hard Disk RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have just bought a Samsung S2 external hard drive. I noticed that the power light on the drive stayed on when I safely removed it in XP. Is this normal ? Can it damage my drive ?

  • You should be fine. I think the light is just to show that the power is on. I have 2 hard drives that i keep plugged in all the time to power, but not always plugged in to my laptop and haven't had any issues. I would suggest not to move the hard drive around while it's plugged in just in case the drive is spinning, as that could damage the drive.

  • Thanks for the reply. My Samsung S2 seems fine as I am not getting errors with chkdsk or with transferring data with it. I guess all it does with the drive is spin down and park the read/write heads while retaining the power. The USB port I use is definately fine as well as my card reader has the power turned off to it every time I remove that.
