exchange online backup

Not yet subscribed to the service and doing my due diligence.

Is there a way to download a backup of the online exchange files to another remote server I have as a disaster hedge?

Exchange Online already has disaster recovery in place, however if you want to perform a backup of your own mailboxes locally you should have a look at the MessageOps mailbox backup script: http://www.messageops.com/new-script-bpos-mailbox-backup
