Synchronizng Intranet and Extranet SharePoint Portals RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Experts,

We have developed an Intranet Portal using SharePoint. Now we need to deploy this portal in Extranet environment.
But the Extranet portal will not be an exact replica of Intranet portal.

Extranet Portal = Intranet Portal +/- Additional content

We are considering following approaches but both have some issues:

    1) To use the same content database for both Intranet and Extranet portal. But some content will be different in both portal. So in this situation, can we used this approach?

    2) To create a new SharePoint portal for Extranet environment. But how can we synchronize the content between Intranet and Extranet portal which is in common between two?

Please help to figure out these issues or suggest a solution.

    Thanks in advance.

  • 1) You use the standard methods of having Extranet alongside Intranet. So this is mainly a licensing question. You probably won't be able to use 'MOSS 2007 for the Internet' licences and will need to use normal MOSS 2007 products + licenses together with both MOSS (30K per server) and Server (2K per server) Internet Connection Licenses

    2) Synchronization of two farms isn't possible.

The only way is to program new front-ends on both systems so that uploads (say) go to doc libs on both farms. That's not a reasonable solution and is virtually open-ended as you won't cover all eventualities.
