message to global dist list stuck in categorizer

  • Hi,

    I'm having a strange issue, whereby no matter what I seem to do, when sending messages to a global distribution list, the message gets stuck at "SMTP:message submitted to categorizer" when I track it in message tracking.  No NDR is ever returned, the message is just stuck with no delivery or NDR.  

    Server is Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2 installed on Server 2003 SP1.  Forest and domain are at 2003 level.  DC/GC are in the same site as the Exchange server.  No other deliverability issues to speak of, only this.

    I turned up diagnostic logging of the categorizer to 7 in the registry, and received the following in the event log:

    source: MSExchangeTransport
    Type: Error
    Category: Categorizer
    Event ID: 6009

    Categorizer encountered a hard error while processing a message.  While processing user 'SMTP:Network-On-Call@iscmotorsports.com', the function 'CCatExpandableRecip::HrExpandAttribute' called 'pIUTF8->BeginUTF8AttributeEnumeration' which returned error code '0xc0040550' (). ( f:\tisp2\transmt\src\phatq\cat\src\ccatrecip.cpp@3048 )

    I've searched high and low online, and can't seem to find any information about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi Jason,

     

    Do you have any Anti-Virus running on server? Make sure that exclusion settings are proper.

    Additionally, disable Exchange antivirus scanning also and check the situation.

     

    Is it happening for only one DL or for all DLs in your environment?

  • Hi Amit,

     

    I actually forgot to mention the AV - we do indeed run McAfee AV, but I already disabled the on-access scanning and on-demand scanning, so neither apply.  Just to be sure, I added all all Exchange disks to the exclusion list, but am still getting the same results.

     

    The issue is only with this one global distribution list - I have plenty others just like it that work fine.  That is what has me scratching my head, as it makes no sense.

    The errors C0040550 in the applog mentioned translate to ERROR_GENERIC_NOT_MAPPED. The issue can occur that if mails are sent to Global Distribution Groups in a Multiple Domain environment. In multiple domain environments, it is recommended to use Universal Distribution Groups, rather than Global DGs.

     

    Therefore, please check whether the problem is indeed happening only to mails sent to Global DGs. If I am right, please convert Global DGs to Universal DGs.
