SharePoint 2003 TO SharePoint 2016 migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I would like to understand what are the tools available if I would like to migrate my site(data only) from SharePoint 2003 to SharePoint 2016.

Also, I am assuming that most of the functionality will be re-created or used using a newer feature of SharePoint rather than SharePoint 2003.

Would it be possible to actually migrate this kind of a site without using any third party tool?

    1. The hardest part of any migration is the customizations that have been loaded onto the old environment.  Even Third party software won't help with those.

Other than that, might suggestion would be to get the trial for one of the third party products, watch any training they have available and do a trial several times first.  Its hard to suggest specific considerations and gotchas.  Every migration is a little different and offers different challenges.

  • Migrating it without a third party tool will require a LOT of manual effort and really isn't worth it in my opinion.  Try Sharegate (https://en.share-gate.com/).  You can even get a trial version to try it before you purchase it.

  • Thank you for your reply Paul.

Can you also mention any considerations or gotchas that I should specifically look out for.

I am looking for some generic pointers.

    Thanks again!
