Use the same tape everyday - DPM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Everyone

I have daily backups running everyday with retention of 7 days, however sometimes the following week the DPM keeps asking for a free tape and fails. Normally I force free the tape and erase then run manual backup, but this is time consuming.

The other problem is for remote sites, tapes dont change on a regular basis as that is out of our control.
Before with NTbackup, we would just erase whatever tape is the drive and run a backup. ie whatever tape is in the drive, a backup will take place.

Is this supported in DPM 2012 ?

  • Hi,

DPM 2012 UR2 (KB 2706783) Vyou can add a registry key to allow the tapes to expire in time for the next weeks backup.

Description of Update Rollup 2 for System Center 2012

    Issue 9

Tapes are marked as reusable on the next day after the date of expiry as DPM runs a reclamation job only at midnight. If you want the tape to be reusable on the same date as it is expired, create the ExpireDatasetOnDayStart 32- bit DWORD, and set its value to 1 under the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration\MediaManager
