Accessing to FIM Portal - Unable to process your request RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

    I am facing an issue where users can't access to the FIM Portal. It doesn't matter are you a normal user or admin. The error message is allways the same, "Unable to process your request".

    Also I have managed to get a Detailed error message from the portal but it does point me to nowhere. It is below:

    Server Error in '/' Application.

  • 1. Is FIM service running.  Can you do an import or export in FIM MA, to test the FIM Service is up.

    2. Did you by any change delete Admin or build-in accounts in portal?

  • Update to this.

    Now I managed to get this information and error messages from EvenViewer:

    Information Microsoft.ResourceManagement
    BrandBar.BrandTableConfigurationModel.TryInitializeUsingConfigurationModel: Error Retrieving PortalUIConfigurationModel Values:Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

    Error Microsoft.ResourceManagement
    ErrorHandlingModule.HandlePortalException: The following error is not handled through FIM components :Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown.
    Also the server itself is Windows 2012 (not R2).

  • Is this a fresh installation of FIM Service and Portal or are you getting this error after doing any customizations?

    No, this is not a fresh installation. Also we have not done any customizations when this occures.

    Could this be someway related to Kerberos authentication maybe?

    No I have not. Anyway the error message is not exactly the same. My error message is missing "additional information" part.

    Also the problem existed again for a couple of minutes and then disappeared. Only thing which I found is "Cannot find site lookup info for request Uri http://iam.domain.com/IdentityManagement/default.aspx" from the sharepoint server log file.

    Next step is to use tracert and nslookup for portal address when the problem occures again.

    After that I disable Kerberos authentication.

  • Update:

    I have created a MS support ticket for this.

  • I managed to get this kind or error message using tracing:

    The address of the security token issuer is not specified. An explicit issuer address must be specified in the binding for targe 'http://fim.site.net:5725/ResourceManagementService/Enumeration' or the local issuer address must be configured in the credentials.

    What could cause this kind or error?

  • Some update.

    We can temporarily fix the issue.

    If we log in the portal server and run InternetExplorer using "run as different user" mode with our test account and then access to the portal, it fixes the problem for all the users.

    Also if a user who gets the error message using IE logs in the portal using Firefox fixs the problem.

    Any idea what is wrong? So the portal is unreachable for all the users before using workarounds.

    Workarounds found this far:

    • User logs in to the portal using Firefox from any machine
    • Using IE with "run as different user" mode with test account from the portal server

  • The fact that it works in another browser, tells me this is a browser issue, not FIM.

    What is the version of IE?   There are some known issues with IE 11.

    I have an application that behaves similarily and the workaround, not a solution, is to clear temporary internet files "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files"

  • What version of SharePoint are you running?  I can recreate this error when attempting to disable the custom error pages if I'm running SharePoint 2013.  One of the steps for disabling the custom error pages is to comment the following line in web.config

        <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true">

          <!-- <add name="ILMError" preCondition="integratedMode" type="Microsoft.IdentityManagement.WebUI.Controls.ErrorHandlingModule, Microsoft.IdentityManagement.WebUI.Controls, Version=4.1.3496.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" /> -->

          <add name="SPNativeRequestModule" preCondition="integratedMode" />

    When commented like above, I cannot load the Portal and I receive the error that you're seeing.  By uncommenting, the Portal will load just fine.

    Hope that helps!

  • RYounk007 is correct, if I try to disable the friendly error page by commenting the "ILMError" module, I get this exception too.

    Did anyone find how to get rid of this error? It seems we can't see the detailed error page with Sharepoint 2013?

  • Hi,

    Try clearing the Browser cache, restarting the FIMService and do an IISRESET. Usually resolves this.

  • Hi, no it doesn't work. Even a server reboot does not solve this issue.

    Only when I re-enable the "ilmerror" module, the error goes straight away.

  • The same happens when you run SharePoint 2016. Have anyone found a way to enable detailed error messages for FIM/MIM on top of newer SharePoint versions?

    Best regards, Yuriy

  • Hi,

    In the Global.Asax file in the inetpub folder of the MIM Service / Portal server, I have added this snippet which has been used as a workaround to this issue (WebUtils in the stack trace) in the past. No guarantees though. This could also be due to having duplicate links in your nav-bar.

    Warnings:

    1. Back Up the original Global.asax file.
    2. Apply this change in a NON production environment first to verify it mitigates your issue.
    3. Restart IIS after applying

    <script runat="server">
        void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
      try
      {
       System.Reflection.Assembly a = System.Reflection.Assembly.GetAssembly(typeof(Microsoft.IdentityManagement.WebUI.UniversalObjectControl.HttpHandlerHelper));
       Type t = a.GetType("Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Utilities.StaticInitializer");
       System.Reflection.MethodInfo method = t.GetMethod("Initialize", System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Static | System.Reflection.BindingFlags.Public);
       method.Invoke(null, null);
      }
      catch(Exception ex)
      {
       // Log
      }
        }
    </script>
