    Since Bitlocker wouldn't work for me (older BIOS), I tried to use EFS.

    First time EFS encryption on this machine.

    Fails with error: 'provider could not perform the action since the context was acquired as silent'.

    Any ideas?

    nope.

    Possibly related is that Backup Files also fails with an error about Shadow Copy not working because of some system error.

    Backup has started to work correctly.

    However this EFS error remains.

    Any ideas?

    I did an upgrade to XP SP2.

    I wonder if I should have done a clean install.
