Rename Exchange Mailbox

    General discussion

  • Hi all,

I've implemented FIM with synchronization between HR system and AD, one scenario is to allow the rename of accountNames with active exchange 2007 mailboxes, the rename is done properly, but I can't figure out the way to rename exchange mail addresses too. I did update mailNickName and email Adress within the AD account, but with Exchange 2007 I think this is not enough, when users logon with the new account, the outlook still uses the old email name,

is there anyway to perform this task? do I have to update any specific attributes to make this happen?

  • Did you check the proxyAddresses and targetAddress attribute?

FYI, mail, targetAddress are also related to the proxyAddresses attribute...
Mail, targetAddress and proxyAddresses are autoset by the Exchange system, when a mailbox is created.
See: Carol's article on Managing Exchange 2000/2003/2007 with ILM 2007 (you can continue to manage the Exchange attributes with FIM...)

targetAddress must be the format "", AFAIK.
In proxyAddresses, the "SMTP:...." (uppercase) is the primary mail address, the "smpt:..." (lowercase) entries are the secondary addresses...
    (not mentioning other prefixes).

Usually if you change the primary SMTP address, the old one is added as secondary.
If you want to fully control it, you need to manage both entry types in the proxyAddresses attribute (+ targetAddress and mail attribute).

But you should be very careful with managing these attributes directly! (check here)

  • Thanks Peter for the guidlines, I Managed to get the ProxyAddresses imported into a multivalued attribute within MV, but I'm still trying to figure out a way to update the mulitvalues, I'm planning to change the Primary SMTP to see the effect,

is there any easy way to update the multivalues by doing a normal data flow? or should i look into any other methods?

    thanks for your time!
