Windows7 RC install problem

Question
-
I'm trying to install the 64 bit RC on a secondary machine with WinXP-32 SP3 installed as the primary operating system
Athlon 64 4400+ installed on an ASUS A8R32-MVP Delux with 2mb memory installed
Booting from the CD (Downloaded twice, burned and verified the burn)
Get the "loading windows" and block fill.
Goes to "Starting Windows" and stalls - have let sit there for several hours, no disk activity, no error messages.
No log files that I can see on any of the partitions. Booting from CD never completes. No visible effect on any of the hard drives.
Any suggestions?

This will be my final update unless someone else has another idea.
Removed drive with XP installed, and replaced with clean, blank drive.
Removed second video card,
Disconnected all other drives in the machine except the blank drive and the cd.
Installation of Windows7 64 bit hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen just like all the other times.
Will wait until I have to build a new machine before trying anything again. Vista betas and RC weren't this much problem.

I can't recall exact details but do remember there were a number of problems with installing a 64-bit OS on a drive that already had a 32-bit OS installed on it. In other words if you were to install XP 64-bit or x64 Edition on your drive with the already installed XP 32-bit you would run into the same problems. The only workable solution to that issue I can recall was to install the 64-bit OS on a different HDD.
If you have an additional HDD installed on your computer that would be the best way to install Windows 7 RC 64-bit. If you do have an addition HDD but you are using it to store other data you could temporarily (or permanently on a DVD?) back up all that data somehow (maybe on your root drive if you've got the room), clean and reformat it with more than one partition, stick all that backed-up data back on in one of the new partitions and use the other partition you created for the installation of Windows 7 RC 64-bit.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tomorrow I'll put a clean 300GB ATA drive (Have one from a machine I'm tearing down.) in the machine and unplug all the rest. Then see if the problem repeats when there is only one drive visible to the bios.

Tried clean drive on IDE primary controller, with both the SATA drives unplugged.
Same result. Stall at "Starting Windows" after the load from the CD.

This is wrong! I have successfully installed Win7 64bit
on the same HDD, where XP 32bit was installed.
In dual boot configuration, i.e. on a partition different
from the XP partition. And my successfull installation
is not an exception, it is the rule. So your answer is wrong.
On the other hand, the info in DavidLeeDavis123's post
is insufficient to give the definite answer about the
failure of installation in his particular case.
The most probable reason yet seems to be
an unseccessfull burn to DVD -- there are numerous
posts in this forum showing that this was really the reason
in many of the cases.Tuesday, June 2, 2009 4:30 PM -
Tried clean drive on IDE primary controller, with both the SATA drives unplugged.
So You have three HDD's on Your system: two SATA and one IDE!
This is very essential info, which should be given in Your first post.
As well as the boot sequence for these HDD's, the disk where XP
was installed (IDE or one of SATA's?) and the BIOS settings for HDD's
(IDE or AHCI?). It is important as well whether the DVD drive itself is IDE
or SATA.
In any case this additional info minimizes (though not excludes completely)
the probability that the reason of the installation failure was bad DVD installation disk,
as was suggested in my previous post.Tuesday, June 2, 2009 4:45 PM -
For most recent attempt:
300 GB IDE installed on Primary controller as master, drive was empty, quick reformat NTFS primary partition
CD installed on secondayr IDE controller.
No other drives connected
Have downloaded the RC 64bit twice, burned with two different drives.
Getting same result with any of the examples I have.
Booting from CD first, HDD second priority
Get the "loading windows" and block fill.
Goes to "Starting Windows" and stalls - have let sit there for several hours, no disk activity, no error messages.

And what about BIOS settings? As far as I understand they are to be set to "IDE", not "AHCI", because both DVD drives and HDD are IDE.Tuesday, June 2, 2009 5:39 PM

What exactly do you mean by block fill?
Does the install process ever boot the machine at all.
If you have a floppy drive, disconnect it.

snifferpro
At the start of the install process, the screen says "loading windows" and shows a tinted block below, the tint fills with a darker tint as the load progresses.
The process completes filling the lighter tints with the darker tints.
The screen then blanks and the screen displays "Starting Windows" and makes no further change.
No floppy is installed, no cable, disabled in bios.

Bios settings are pretty much at default.
System boots normally to XP-Sp3 when that hard drive is installed. Both the XP and blank drive are Maxtor IDE (ATA133) drives.

When you burned your dvd, did you use the slowest speed possible?
I know you've downloaded and burned twice, but I would download again and
burn with Imgburn (free) at the slowest speed possible and try the install again.
Another option is to copy the ISO to a bootable USB stick and install from there.

Burned at slowest speed possible. Used the burner in the machine I'm using for the install the last time.
Will try again with a fresh download. And different burning software.
Unfortunately the bios on the motherboard does not boot from usb, or I haven't found that switch in the bios.
Thanks for the suggestions.

New download, burned to disk using different software, same result.
Think I'll purchase a new drive for my Vista machine and try installing on that.
Will report on that effort in about a week.

I tried to install 7 on a new machine with 2 9800GTX's and would get just a black screen after initial reboot into windows, but if I removed the second video card it would go right into windows.
Did all the driver installs and windows updates, but still cant re install the second video card.Monday, June 29, 2009 8:14 PM -
Thanks for the insight. I may try taking a card out of this machine.

Hi I had this problem when I first downloaded 64 BIT RC, and the problem was not my drive either. I had the same reports as you and the burn was verified. I discovered that it was a bit of data that had been corrupted during download that had caused the problem. The reports just confuse the issue. It does not help that during setup that at the begining the setup does seem to hang when in reality its still setting up perhaps it could be suggested that the designers put some kind of indicator in that section to show that the program is still installing.
I used a different program to download it and burned it again and it worked perfectly.

You say you are installing from the CD if this is so then it stops because the File is 3.05 gigabits and your only burning 700 mb of the file.Wednesday, July 29, 2009 11:07 AM
