Had to rebuild a protected server. Any way to seamlessly connect back to the DPM RRS feed

  • Question

  • DPM 2012 sp1  has been protecting the file server for several years.

unfortunately we had an issue that required a wipe of the protected servers OS. We re-installed the same OS, called it by the same name, but don't really expect the DPM server to start  protecting it just because a server of the same name with the same data appears back on the network.

Is it a case of deleting the protected server server from the DPMs protected group, and then adding it again?

  • Hi Joe,

As you have figured out, DPM will see the data on the protected server as new data. This is because DPM has lost tracking of the block-level filter(since you re-installed the OS).

If you have sufficient storage available, I would suggest you to stop protection of the "old"-server but retain its recovery points and add your "new"-server to the protection group.
This will require additional disk space during the time you wait for the retention time for the "old"-server to expire and before you manually delete the old data.

What I've explained is probably not the answer you were hoping for but it will give you the security that you have the ability to restore data without any troubles.

    Kind Regards
