Windows XP stopped booting RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Last week Windows XP stopped booting. After the windows XP logo appears I get a black screen and then nothing happens.

I used a system restore from earlier in the year in the hope this would resolve the problem. When McAfee is run it finds a virus and quarantines file "74357c47-3d0224c6". I then get the same problem in that windows does not boot with the black screen after the windows XP logo.

I've gone back a few restores to try to get a vesion without the virus but without luck (I'm now at the beginning of 2011!).

I'm assuming that the failure to reboot is due to the quarantined file.

Any ideas how I can resolve this issue?

  • Hi Mabus,

You can try safe mode if you wish, this may work.

If no success, insert the XP cd or load to the relevant rescue partition and choose the repair xp option. This will re-load the windows core files to the pc and should get you back up and running.
