Windows 7 Pro file transfer hangs when tranfering a large number of files RRS feed

  • Question

  • When transferring a large number of files (> approx 100) from either a DVD drive or FLASH drive Windows 7 Pro hangs after transferring approx the first 100 files out of approx 500. The only out is to terminate in Task Manager. And to add insult to injury doing so, requires several attempts and will freeze home screen without icons displayed. Using DELL laptop.

  • hi,

Do you use a SATA or IDE hard drive to connect to the computer?

This problem may caused by Windows Explorer or it may be related to low-level I/O subsystem.

To sort out Explorer issue, you can try:

    1. Boot into Safe Mode and try transfer the files

    2. Run sfc /scannow in CMD as administrator to scan and fix the corrupted system files.

    3. Use Windows Defender to scan and remove the malware software

Also, it may also caused by low level drivers, disk hardware, SATA/IDE mode etc.

You can troubleshoot the issue by:

    1. Check the disk problem

Type chkdsk /f in CMD as administrator

2.Set the controller mode in the BIOS

3.Use Resource Monitor to monitor the hard drive usage.

4.Update the BIOS, drives, make your system up to date

    5. Check the Event Log to see if any errors exist
