Restore a folder in a mailbox after move RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am in the final stages of transition from Exchange 2003 to 2010.  I have been moving mailboxes over the past week, with pretty much 100% success or at least no one has come to me saying otherwise.  Until now.  A user that I moved yesterday, one of my few Outlook 2003 users, came to me today and told me that one of her email subfolders was missing.  After doing some searching, I can't find it.  At this point, not sure what happened, but I know that my last back up of the mailbox was while it was still on the old server.

    I use Symantec Backup Exec.

    So, my question is, how do I restore a folder from the backup from the old server, into the mailbox on the new server?  Can I restore to a mailbox on the old server, extract that folder and move it over?

  • As you have moved the mailbox you will most likely have to change the msExchOrigMDB attribute to point to the DB where the mailbox now resides otherwsie exmerge will fail.

    Just saw the KB Troy has posted, it's in there.

  • Well to get granular recovery you would need to;

    1. Have a GRT based backup since BE can only do recovery from a GRT based backup. Although I am not sure if they allow you to recover to anything other then the original mailbox.  If they do then I would try to recover the missing information to an alternate/temp 2003 mailbox and then export the data to PST and import it to the 2010 structure.
    2. Try to recover the full database backup to the 2003 server via RSG http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126 and then use ExMerge as outlined in this article to export just the needed data to PST and then import in via Outlook or Exchange 2010 cmdlets
    3. Another option would be to use Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp which will allow you to open any offline Exchange database so that you can Browse, View and Export Mailboxes, Folders and Individual items to PST, MSG & XML or you can Recover data directly from the offline Exchange database into any Production Exchange Server ( Even cross version i.e. Exchange 2003 --> 2007 or in your case 2010)
