What happened to Windows Media Center? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Vista Home Premium (64bit) and can not find Media Center anywhere on my pc. I am the administrator, also checked another user account, not there either. If i type Media in the search box, it only shows media player. I dont remember deleting it...? Is there a way I can re-install the program without re-installing my OS?

  • Hi Jef.

Try Repairing Windows Vista Media Center files

You can use the following steps to repair the files that are a part of Windows Vista Media Center:

    • Click on the Start menu, choose All Programs, then Accessories, then right-click on the Command Prompt item and select Run as administrator
    • Click Continue to authorize opening a command prompt with administrative privileges
    • Run this command in the cmd prompt: sfc /scannow
    • The cmd prompt should list text stating "Beginning system scan. This process will take some time."
    • Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes so be patient).  This command will scan all protected system files and attempt to replace incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions
    • When the scan completes, the SFC tool will indicate whether or not it found any problems and whether or not it was able to fix them
After fixing any errors that are found, try to use Windows Vista Media Center again

Repairing Windows Vista Media Center registry entries

Unfortunately, there is not an easy way of repairing the registry keys/values that are installed by Windows Vista like there is for files.  If you want to try to repair the registry keys/values that are a part of Windows Vista Media Center, you will need to run Windows Vista OS setup again and repair the OS.

Hope this will resolve your problem

    Good luck

  • Hi,

  • Hi,

use the Windows Explorer, go to the folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS and copy the file to your desktop/document folder. Now you can open it at the new location.

  • Ok, zip the CBS.log and upload it to your SkyDrive and post the link here. I'll take a look at the log.

  • @Andre,

I appreciate you're attempts to help me, however I have no idea how to zip a log, or upload it to my skydrive

  • When i say to zip a file, we mean that you create a ZIP file which compresses the file. For more info about Zip read this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_(file_format)

Use a tool like WinZip, WinRAR, 7Zip to create a zip.

To upload a file to Skydrive, go to http://skydrive.live.com/ and sign in with your LiveID. Now you have 25GB of space to upload and share files to your friends.

Go to the public folder and upload the zip file and copy the link and paste it here.

  • ok, i'm looking at the text doc(s) one listed as CBS.log thats about 27mb, (theres another thats CBS.persist.log thats a 54mb text document) so i right click on the CBS.log and i have options to add to archive..., add to "CBS.rar, compress and email, and compress to CBS.rar and email. Also i can Sedt to > a compressed (zipped) folder but when i try that its says cant do it there, how about desktop, i say yes, it says "File not found or no read permission" I looked at the security permissions of the file, and read was selected...?

I selected add to CBS.rar and got an error message "Cannot create CBS.rar, Access is denied" from the WinRAR

I also went through WinRAR and tried to add the same file, and got the same error message.

I was able to go to the skydrive link, and get access to the public folder, nothing to add to it yet though.

  • You can't create the RAR filem because you don't have the permissions to write to the folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS. Select the 3 files inside the folder and copy them to your document folder and create the RAR there. In your document fodler you can create new files.

yes, I took a look at the log and I can't find errors.

Start the control panel and go to program and select "Add / remove Windows feature" and check that the Windows Media Center is correctly installed. If te checkbox is unchecked, select it and click ok.
