  • Hi everybody, one question: may I install FCS on a client without a server?

  • Yes.  Without a server you obviously would not have any server functionality(reporting, alerting, etc).  Since the server is not present, there is no reason to install the MOM agent on the client machine(since there is nothing to receive those events).

    Therefore to install a standalone client simply run:  clientsetup.exe /NoMOM

    This will install only the antimalware and security assessment client agents.

  • To follow up on that, if your client is not opt-ed in to MU (Microsoft Update), your client would not receive updated signatures.  Forefront Client Security signatures are hosted on MU (only, not WU - Windows Update), which is designed to synchronize with WSUS as part of the FCS server configuration

    If you don't use the server, you will need to opt your client into Microsoft Update - visit http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate and complete the opt-in process so you can then receive signatures for the FCS client
