Add a link to a file in File server from Document library RRS feed

I want to add a link to a large size file (that we cannot upload to the document library), so users can access from within the document library.

I've added a Link to Document content type but when I try to write the path (that i have access to it)to the file: file://\\server name\folder A\folder B\filename. I'm getting the following error: Enter a valid document name and URL. Valid URLs should begin with http:// or https://. I tried the following path: file://servername/folder A/folder B/filename. but same error appeared.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks a lot in advance

  • One thing you can do is create a windows shortcut to the file.  This produces an lnk file.  Then you can upload that to the document library.  I remember doing this a long time ago as a one-off solution for the same problem and it worked fine.

  • HI, else you can create Hyperlink field type column in the document library and add the link to the document from the server.
