word document collaboration RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been asked to set up a document workspace in SharePoint.  The users want to collaborate simultaneously on the word document at the same time by making dissimilar changes and then saving the document and SharePoint will perform conflict resolution on the changes and merge all the changes to a single document.

I have been online researching the subject and cannot find any specific information on, or if this is possible, some sources say it is, some say it is not.

So can i get a definite answer, and maybe what is needed to set up?

  • In SP 2003 systems it was possible provided that you started at the Word document end. (A good book with details of that was the O'Reilly SharePoint 2003 book from Jeff Webb)

But I have a feeling this possiblity vanished in the 2007 systems. But it's only a feeling so see what happens when you in Word create a document and then in Word say you want it stored in a SharePoint system.

P.S. By "this possibility" I meant "SharePoint will perform conflict resolution" Document workspaces are still possible in 2007 systems.
