System crashes (BSD) when disconnecting (unplugging) External USB hard disk RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I've been using windows SS for a while now and it has been working fine all this time.  However, last week I bought a western digital 320gb USB My Passport external hard drive and every time I disconnect it, the system crashes.  I know this is related to win SS because when I had turned it off then system did not crash.

I've tried reformatting WD USB hard disk from fat32 to ntfs system but still the same thing.  Oddly, this does not happen if I use a usb flash drive.

When I try to remove WD hard disk by using windows "safely remove hardware" option by double clicking on sys tray icon, it gives me the message that it cannot stop usb mass storage device because a process is accessing it (my guess is win ss process).

has anyone else ever had a problem like this before?  are there any solutions?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!
